Stories from the Light Table

The light table has become the newest venue for storytelling. Asking children to explain their "light table stories" provides and opportunity for them to tell about their creation from a different lens. Not only do they use descriptive words, but words from story telling engagments move in and out of their descriptions.
"One day there was a crab princess castle. It was beautiful. There was a beautiful sun inside and many happy crab princesses."

"This is a story about a car with lots of wheels.  It is shooting blue fire and fireballs. There is a purple minecraft piece floating in the top and the villages are there with it. They are safe because they are not getting shot."

"This is a shark, a beautiful shark. There are so may many bubbles around the shark. This shark is swimming inthe beaufitul beautiful ocean. Let's add shells. Because oceans have shells and blue waves at the top."

  1. Hi Kerry,
Thank you for sharing this. I'm wondering if you have any links/resources to share on projects/activities using the light table. As a HS teacher, I think it would a great resource to use for digital storytelling, I'm seeing some potential stop-motion applications in my imagination.

How long have you been using it, and -- how expensive are they?
    Thanks again for sharing!

    1. Hi Tricia,
Thanks for looking! To be honest, someone about a month ago asked if I'd like to borrow it. I grabbed it and I will keep it until she needs it.

There are so many differen kinds. Big and boxy. Sleek. Thin. Tables, round, short, tall. Take a look at the link above. I can definitely see great potential for any age. I think teachers just need to see potential -- use it as a great provocation. I would have loved to used one in high school. Any materials work too... Come visit. Bring students? Try it out in the next few weeks :)

  2. Dear Kerry,

I absolutely love seeing your work! Such cool things you are doing with your students. They are lucky to have a teacher so creative and engaging, one who is constantly looking to new stimuli to get them talking and learning. I wish I had learned German the way your students are learning English.

    Kindest regards,
    Valerie

    1. Thanks Val. I truly love my students. They make me a better teacher. They can take a simple bead or a piece of glass in to an amazing beautiful story.
